Composer, musician, bandleader living in Denmark. Mainly active in Afenginn and Dánjal. Born 1976 in Finland.
I was born in a small town in Finland in 1976 and although there was an early interest in music, most of my time as a youngster was spent on sports. The musical interest took successively over in my teens, resulting in letting my hair grow long and starting a local rockband, Café Noija.
In 1995-96 I went to Denmark to study music and after returning to Finland to do my civil service in, I moved back to Denmark in 1998, where I started studying Musicology at the University of Copenhagen.
In this period I learned a lot of of musical theory and it opened up a completely new world. I became more and more dedicated to composing and spent hours and hours learning about fugas, counterpoint, harmonic progressions, Neopolitanian subdominants, etc and worked actively on incorporating these in my compositions. The studies included lots of practising music (mostly piano), and I slowly started missing to be in a band and to play and experiment with my own music. In 2000 I met Rune Kofoed through an ad and in 2002 Afenginn was founded.
My compositorial nerve is close to the folkmusic of the North and Eastern Europe – both the Finnish and Scandinavian melody and melancholy as well as the pathos and craze of Balkan/Eastern Europe. In Afenginn I found a forum where these kinds of compositions – mixed up with the classical tools and a good bunch of rock´n roll – found home. Shortly after our debut concert in 2002 we started to perform a lot, playing wild and crazy shows and getting a following in Denmark.
In 2004 our debut-album Retrograd was released and since then we’ve released Akrobakkus (2006), Reptilica Polaris (2008), Bastard Etno (2010), LUX (2013) and the latest release OPUS in 2016. The critics have been treating well, and every album has been nominated – often i several categories – to the Danish Music Awards (folk & world) and we’ve received four statues so far, including “Best Composer”. The band has performed many hundred shows all over the world and most of my time is spent managing, composing and touring with these guys.
Since 2007 I’ve been co-writing and performing with the band Dánjal, gathered by the the Faroese singer and pianoplayer Dánjal a Neystabø. Our collaboration has developed into a deep friendship and partnership in music, numerous hours on the road and three albums: The Palace (2008), The Bubble (2012) and TIME from 2014
In 2010 the quartet Astrozub was founded with Rasmus Krøyer (Afenginn, etc) on clarinet, Maggie Björklund (Jack White, Darleens, etc) on pedal steel and Jens Chemnitz on double bass. We were interested in quiet, slow and minimalistic music with lots of time and space. It is a wonderful little band, but unfortunately it’s been a bit difficult to find time in our calendars for this at the moment. We’ve made one album which was nominated for “Best Composer” to Danish Music Awards – folk, and played a couple of tours in Denmark. It’s on the wishlist to get more of this…
Apart from this I have written a symphonic piece (Nordisk) with recitation in all Nordic languages and music for theater and films.
